NGLIA member companies are all active in the field of solid state lighting in the United States and, in many cases, globally. Some Alliance members are active chiefly in the field of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and others in inorganic light emitting diodes (LEDs).

Several member companies focus on SSL component and materials businesses, while others are active in integrated SSL lighting system solutions.

Any private, for profit firm substantially active in solid state lighting research, development, infrastructure, and manufacturing in the United States may be a participant in the Alliance. Each firm must execute a Collaboration Agreement and agree to share in the costs and pay fees in a manner approved by the Agreement and the Board of Directors of the Alliance.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is responsible for carrying out the administrative and legal functions of the Alliance.
